Founded on a biblical worldview, it uses spiritual language which may not be understood by those unfamiliar with it. However, churches using parenting classes as outreach to unbelievers should note that this book is written for parents who are already familiar with the Bible. My experience in biblical counselling and in leading parenting groups is that parenting is most powerfully impacted when parents use the study guide after reading each chapter. I highly recommend this book for use 1) by parents, 2) in small group parenting courses in a local church, and 3) as homework in individual or family biblical counselling sessions.

Learning how to use questions – loving questions which help parents understand their teenager more deeply and which enable the teenager to recognise their own motivations and how they need to grow and change. Learning to see “troubles” as God–given opportunities in which parents can be “salesmen for God’s wisdom”. Moving away from a “behaviour modification” approach to one that enables teenagers to see their need for Christ and recognise the goodness of His wisdom. Drawing from experiences in his own home and examples from his counselling, Tripp presents principles that will bring God’s purposes into parenting. Tripp focuses on God’s purposes for parenting, which is particularly helpful in light of the parenting and family life modelled by Western culture. For example: do parents see their kids as personal trophies instead of God’s treasures? Does an idol of comfort mean we want parenting to be a comfortable experience where I am the one who is being served (not God)? We are warned to ask ourselves early and often, “Whose desires rule the moments of opportunity with my teenager – God’s or mine?” With reference to Ezekiel 14, Tripp teaches parents to identify their own idols and how those idols are impacting their parenting.

Tripp begins by helping parents view teen culture through the lens of scripture – quite a new perspective for many parents! Modelling Luke 6:39–42, he helps parents think about the “log in their own eye” before addressing the problems they see in their teenagers. A chapter–by–chapter study guide gives practical instruction on how to apply the principles of the book in their families. This book encourages parents to look firstly at their own hearts, allowing God’s word to penetrate and transform them, and after that their parenting. The author, Paul Tripp, is a pastor and conference speaker and served as a counsellor and faculty member at CCEF for many years.
